REUSE OPPORTUNITIES - ON-LINE
In recent years a number of on-line opportunities have been created that help people give away items they no longer want, and help people find used items that someone else no longer needs. The two most common forms are online bulletin boards – such as Craig’s list, and email distribution groups, such as freecycle. Below is a list of some of the sites available to placeCityConcord residents. If you know of other sites that should be included please send us an email to let us know recycle@concordma.gov.
On-Line Bulletin Boards
Craig’s list
Craig’s list is a nationwide bulletin board with local chapters. People post descriptions (including photographs) of items they have to give away or sell, as well as post jobs, housing, services and more. The closest chapters to Concord are Boston and Worcester chapters. Anyone can access the Craig’s list website. There is no cost to post or reply to information on Craig’s list.
Postings to Craig’s list are listed chronologically, so if after a few days the item is still available it makes sense to repost the item so new visitors to Craig’s list are more likely to see the listing.
Email List Groups
There are a number of on-line redistribution email groups set up for people to give away items they no longer want, or ask for items that other members may have to give away. The most popular of these groups is Freecycle, but a number of other groups exist as well. The way these groups share information about items to be given away is through emails sent to all group members.
To have access to any of these on-line email groups people must first join the group. When joining members sign up to receive email postings in one of three ways 1) as they are sent 2) a single daily email containing all postings for the past 24 hours, or 3) receive no emails but have access to review emails online.
Members use the following notation in the subjectline of emails to help email recipients know if they might be interested without having to open or read the email:
WANTED: [name of item desired} - location
OFFER: [Name of item to be given away] - location
TAKEN: [Name of posted items that are no longer available]
